Differentiate Spectra from Polypro rope

  1. This group seems totally dead now. I'll give it a try
    anyway.

My question of the day: How can we differentiate polypro
rope from Spectra Rope. Spectra rope i bought recently
has exactly the same color. Pattern and texture as the
polypro rope. I try to id my rope but there is
always a risk of mixing with the polypro rope of
    others.

Is there a trick to see the difference?

Spectra rope i bought long time ago was heavier, with a more
rigid exterior, red and yellow but with a slightly different
    pattern than polypro rope.

The densities are very close, but Tom accidentally gave you a hint. ;>)
Try cutting it. You will find that polypro rope cuts pretty easily,
but Spectra is almost impossible. When I used Spectra cloth for boat
reinforcement, I had to cut it with a hot knife.

  3. Thanks Guys,

I think Spectra rope is a Spectra core with Polypro
Shell. I am sure my old Spectra rope floats but not as
well as the full Polypo rope. I'll try to see how the new
spectra rope floats. This could be a quick, non intrusive,
    ckeck.

I will definitely try to cut the new spectra rope
to make sure it is really is spectra because it sure looks
    a lot like polypro.

    Merry Christmas to all.
